In 2023, David Smith solved the einstein problem by proving that there exists a polygon that can tile the plane infinitely without producing a pattern. Smith and his co-authors called this 13-sided polygon as "The Hat". Einstein here is a wordplay on ein stein, which in German means "one stone". [Gudipati]
