On his birthday in July, 1998, Stephen Wood became the world's leading contributor of CPU time to the GIMPS project. He has a Ph.D. in physics from MIT and is a nuclear physicist at Jefferson Laboratory. His other interests include, his wife and children, genealogy, violin and klezmer music, and Linux. Since he hasn't so far discovered any Mersenne primes, he went and discovered a smaller large prime so as to appear on this bio page.
