I joined GIMPS in 1996 before they found their first prime. When the exponents on GIMPS got too big for my patience, I moved to other projects. When I still couldn't find any primes, I just picked an exponent and started searching. It worked, because I did find a couple of primes that way. Currently (March 2003), I spend most of my time working on the Riesel problem. I found a prime in the Riesel search that briefly put me in the top 100.
